Apple paired the 1998 iMac’s friendly translucent shell with a mouse shaped like a drink coaster. The Apple USB Mouse measured 75 millimetres across and came with a 600-millimetre cable. Its round body made orientation needlessly uncertain: lift your hand to type, return it slightly rotated, and forward had quietly moved somewhere else. Apple dragged desktop computing out of the beige-box era, then supplied a pointer that required directional supervision.
