Pontiac introduced the Aztek for the 2001 model year as a “sport recreational vehicle,” complete with flexible cargo space and camping ambitions. Unfortunately, the production design looked like several unrelated cars had been compressed into one file. Contemporary coverage reported hostility before it had properly reached showrooms; TIME later put it among the worst cars ever while conceding that a useful, competent crossover lived underneath. A practical vehicle defeated by its own face.
