★ Curator’s Notes ★

The Yugo GV reached America in 1985 at roughly $3,990, making it the country’s cheapest new car. Its own company president conceded it lacked style and performance; Consumer Reports advised budget buyers to purchase a good used car instead and later called the Yugo one of the worst cars it had tested. The low price was real. Unfortunately, so was the car.

A $3,990 new car that made a persuasive case for the reliability of somebody else’s old car.
