Amazon launched the Fire Phone in 2014 for $199 with a two-year AT&T contract, promoting its head-tracking “Dynamic Perspective” display and a dedicated Firefly button that recognized products. Less than two months after release, the contract price fell to 99 cents. Amazon later recorded about $170 million in charges primarily related to Fire Phone inventory and supplier commitments: a very expensive way to put the Amazon catalog in your palm.
